TIKAL NATIONAL PARK
Spanning 575 square kilometers of jungle and countless ruined constructions. The central sector of the ancient city alone hosts 3,000 structures over an approximate area of 16 square kilometers. Tikal forms part of the Mayan Biosphere Reserve, a one million hectare conservation area established in 1990 to safeguard the dense Petén forests, which faced severe threats from growing population, unlawful timber cutting and slash-and-burn farming techniques. Experts in archaeology believe that Maya civilization started inhabiting the region currently known as Tikal around 900 BC.
BRIEF OVERVIEW: Yaxha, an archeological hotspot, is roughly an hour’s journey from both Tikal National Park and Flores. It offers visitors the opportunity to experience nature and water, given its location amid two lakes that offer astounding views from atop several temples.
