The castle was expanded when the trade focus shifted from gold to slaves, with storerooms being converted into dungeons.
The informative tour (included in the entry fee) guides you through the grim dungeons, punishment cells, the Door of No Return, and the turret room where the British held the Ashanti king, Prempeh I, for four years.
Elmina Castle is the oldest European building in existence in sub-Saharan Africa, being the first trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea. Elmina is also a charming fishing town along Ghana’s coast.

Travelled throughout Ghana for 3 weeks, moving from Accra to Kumasi to Cape Coast. Had a wonderful time! - Amazing experience throughout! Could not have been happier! Tour guides were world class and extremely knowledgeable!

Amazing!!! - As this was my first time visiting Ghana, Biney and his staff provided the most personal and attentive tours throughout Accra, Ghana. From the first conversation and also upon arrival at the airport we knew we were in safe and well equipped hands. With each personal request, Biney and his staff were able to arrange whatever our adventurous minds could come up with. I recommend and give this to our group 5 out of five stars.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Amazing. Will love to do it again - Our journey to the slave castles and Kakum National Park was a deeply moving and enlightening experience. Walking through the halls of the castles, we were confronted with the stark reality of the transatlantic slave trade, feeling a profound sense of sorrow and reverence for those who suffered within those walls. Kakum National Park offered a stark contrast, with its lush rainforest canopy walk providing breathtaking views and a serene escape into nature. Together, these sites offered a powerful blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that left a lasting impact on us both."

Great tour! - Great tour! I happened to do a solo one with Biney and he was a wonderful guide. Would definitely recommend! Only issue was a delayed start time due to a miscommunication but otherwise a lovely day.
