Highlights

Day 1: MIHUNGA GATE (1615m asl.) – NYABITABA CAMP (2651m asl.)

Rwenzori Mountains National Park - Your driver guide will drive you to Nyakalengijja for the trip briefing and organising your equipment. The trail begins by passing through farmland to the park boundary beyond which it follows a thick forest along the Mubuku River, crossing its Mahoma River tributary before starting a long, steep climb up onto a massive ridge to reach Nyabitaba hut. During this part of the trip you may hear chimpanzee and see black and white colobus, blue monkey and the brilliantly coloured Rwenzori turraco.
Hike duration: 6 -7 hours. Elevation height: 1,036m

NYABITABA (2651m asl.) – JOHN MATTE CAMP (3505m asl.)

Rwenzori Mountains National Park - From Nyabitaba follow the trail that drops down through the forest to the Kurt Shafer Bridge, just below the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers. Passing through the bamboo forest, traverse through a long and exhausting stretch of slippery moss-covered rock. From the Nyamuleju rock shelter, Mount Stanley and Mount Speke can be seen before passing into the zone of the giant heather, lobelia and groundsel. Finally reach John Matte Hut after passing through the tiring bog, for dinner and overnight at the hut.
Hike duration: 7 – 8 hours. Elevation height: 854m

JOHN MATTE (3505m asl.) – BUJUKU CAMP (3962m asl.)

Rwenzori Mountains National Park - From John Matte Hut the trail drops down to cross the Bujuku River and enters Lower Bigo Bog, the home of giant lobelias. Jumping from tussock to tussock, the bog is finally crossed but rarely without the feet sampling some of the freezing ooze below. The upper Bigo bog gives way to Bujuku Lake, with views of Mt Baker to the South and Mt Stanley to the West. Bujuku Hut, well located in the shadow of Mount Baker and Mount Speke, is set in a narrow valley below Stuhlmann Pass. This camp is good for acclimatization for clients attempting the summits of peaks Mount Stanley and Mount Speke. Dinner and overnight at Bujuku hut.
Hike duration: 4 – 5 hours. Elevation height: 457m

BUJUKU (3962m asl.) – ELENA CAMP (4541m asl.)

Rwenzori Mountains National Park - Leaving Bujuku, the trail takes you through more bog, while climbing the steep slopes west of the lake and through the magical and forest of Groundsel Gully. Turn to your right up to Elena Hut and Mount Stanley on a steep trail over large boulders, while the trail on your left leads to Scott-Elliot Pass and down to Kitandara Lakes the trail on he left leads those who are not climbing Margherita Peak to Kitandara Hut. Those climbing the peak will have their Dinner and overnight at the coolly and Icy Elena Hut.
Hike duration: 5 – 6 hours. Elevation height: 579m

ELENA HUT (4541m asl.) – MARGHERITA PEAK (5109m asl.) – KITANDARA CAMP (4430m asl.)

Rwenzori Mountains National Park - Early in the morning, you attempt climbing the highest peak, Margherita of Mount Stanley. To reach the summit of Margherita, the climb takes about 4 -5 hours depending on the weather conditions and the pace of climbing this mountain. This tough walk takes you over three glaciers, slippery rock, ice and very exposed areas which are open on many sides. Climbing on to the glaciers, cross the Stanley Plateau and proceed with the ascent. Acclimatized to fog, altitude sickness and coolly weather, scramble up to the summit of Margherita the highest peak of the Rwenzori mountains. The Descend from Margherita peak back to Elena Hut will take you about 2 – 3hours.
After your lunch at Elena hut, descend to the Scott-Elliot pass (4372m asl.), where there are spectacular views of Bujuku Lake and Mount Speke. After, the trail passes you through an alpine zone of sparse vegetation and rough boulders, descend past the Kitandara Lakes for overnight at the Kitandara camp.
Descend duration: 3 – 4 hours.

KITANDARA (4430m asl.) – GUY YEOMAN (3261m asl.)

Rwenzori Mountains National Park - From Kitandara, take on the trail that ascends steeply up the headwall, spreading out from the base of Mount Baker and continuing along the south side of the mountain to Fresh field Pass 4282m asl. At this point you can view into the Congo to the west and Mount Stanley to the north. From the pass, take on the long high alpine mossy. Thereafter start the descend through steep rocky trails and the rock shelter at Bujongolo, the base camp for the historic expedition by the Duke of Abruzzi in 1906 and then an overnight at Guy yeoman camp.
Hike duration: 6 – 7 hours.

GUY YEOMAN (3261m asl.) – NYABITABA (2651m asl.) – MIHUNGA GATE (1615m asl.)

Rwenzori Mountains National Park - Below Guy Yeoman, the route descends the cliffs of Kichuchu. Beyond Kichuchu the muddy path crosses the Mubuku River twice through a bamboo forest before climbing downwards to Nyabitaba to complete the circuit.

Additional Information

The trail through the Rwenzori Mountains and to the Margherita Peak summit (5,109m above sea level) carries you through the extensive natural arena of the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, which envelopes the Rwenzori mountain range. Acting as a protective umbrella for the most elevated sections of the 120km in length and 65km in breadth Rwenzori mountain range, the national park is home to a vibrant collection of 70 mammalian species and 217 avian species, with 19 of the latter being Albertine Rift endemics. It also boasts some of the most uncommon plant life on the planet.

Regarded as a premier destination for hiking and mountaineering, the Rwenzoris offer an unparalleled experience. The vegetation characteristic of the Rwenzoris is a rare find in equatorial alpine Africa. With a great number of swift flowing rivers, breathtaking waterfalls and diversified vegetation, the natural allure of the area is unsurpassed. Known for its endemic alpine flora - which includes species like giant heathers, groundsels and lobelias exclusive to the Albertine Rift in the higher altitude regions - the expedition is always a rewarding one.

Rwenzori Mountains trek - Good quality of the service for reasonable price including security. Excelent team and professional guides. Friendly and willing people. Well managed. Clear communication and correct deal. Fast, faultless and flexible organisation and arrangement. Me and my friend, we did a trek in January 2024 in Rwenzori mountains, started from Kasanzi region through camps of Kasanzi, Bekambo, Lami, John Maata hut, Elena hut to Margherita peak, then back to John Maata hut through Irene lake hut and out of the park along the Central cirquit, Bujuku and Mubuku river with lunch in Nyabitaba hut. 7 days, 6 nights in the mountains. We had 2 guides, cooks, porters and 2 rangers. Vladi, Czechia

Bujuku Ecotours was a great choice, excellent service from the first contact. - Amazing experience, highly recommended. Bujuku Ecotours was a great choice, excellent service from the first contact. We hiked Ruwenzori mountains for 7 days, without the peak. The landscapes were really wild and unique, and we saw different types of monkeys, chameleons, deer, birds and lots of beautiful butterflies. Each day was different, and we would have liked to stay even longer. Alfred and Harrison, our tour guides, were excellent, super nice and professional, adjusting to our pace and knowing when to help at more technical spots of the hike. The only challenge for us was the altitude, but even that was fine, though next time we would spend a few days in Uganda to acclimatise rather than going straight from the plane to the mountains. We also got pampered by the team, first and foremost our excellent cook Sedrack who prepared big and tasty meals. We even got fresh fruit at above 3000 m altitude, plus hot water to “shower” every day. We were not used to such luxury during a hike and were very surprised when we were told the two of us would have a dozen porters. But it seems to be the norm, also creating badly needed jobs.

Amazing experience with Bujuku Eco Tours in the Rwenzori mountains - My friend and I just finished an 8-day trek in the Rwenzori mountains with Bujuku Eco Tours and had an amazing time. From the beginning, they were well organized and flexible to tailor personalized trip. The driver Johnson was very kind and expounded on Uganda's history and nature. The company supplied us with high-quality climbing and camping gear that we were unable to bring but was essential for a safe journey. We camped in tents along the Bukurungu trail as we enjoyed the solitude of mystical mountain valleys away from the groups on the central circuit. The hikes were challenging but the team chef supplied us with warm drinks and filling meals to keep us going. Summiting Mt. Speke and Mt. Stanley, we learned new mountaineering techniques while taking in the breathtaking mountain landscapes. I highly recommend Bujuku Eco Tours for any trek in the Rwenzori Mountains to ensure a safe, comfortable, and exciting trek.

Rwenzori Mountains + Chimpanzee trekking + Transport from Kigali - We had a great experience in Uganda with Johnson and Geofrey from Bujuku Eco Tours. We did a 4 day Rwenzori trek and Chimpanzee trekking at an affordable rate. Everything was perfectly organized and the accommodations were very nice. Trekking gear for the Rwenzori mountains was arranged by the organization and of good quality. Transport from and to Kigali was very comfortable and there were possibilities to see a lot on the way. I would 100% recommend Bujuku Eco Tours for people wanting to visit Uganda.

A thrilling Rwenzori mountains trekking experience - I came across Bujuku Eco Tours while searching about the Rwenzori mountains of the moon after reading mixed reviews and i needed more information. The team was very responsive and got me hooked with a lot of helpful information and photos until i decided to book with them. They planned and organised everything from accommodation in Entebbe, transfer to and from Kasese, the PCR test after the trek and guides, porters, climbing gear and the tasty warm meals throughout the trip. Kasese is hot and humid town so they booked for me an air conditioned hotel room which was very comfortable for my two nights in Kasese. They booked and cleared for me everything and the trip was very smooth. We hiked through the central circuit which i had been told was the oldest trail but probably the most amazing from my experience. The trek exceeded my expectations, the beautiful views up, the nature, the red duiker (locally called a mountain goat), the hanging rocks, beautiful lakes and the stanley plateau glacier left me in awe. The guides were very helpful and professional and we felt safe in their hands The feeling was exceptional as i felt i needed more time to enjoy the trail. If you need advise/information or need to book for Rwenzori mountains trekking, i recommend Bujuku Eco Tours.
