Corinth - Epidaurus - Mycenae - Nafplion

Corinth Canal - Our journey begins with a coastal drive, offering views of charming Greek seaside villages and the island of Salamis, known for the historic naval battle between the Athenians and Persians. Our first stop is the Corinth Canal, inaugurated in 1892, which separates the Peloponnese peninsula from mainland Greece and links the Saronic Gulf with the Corinthian Sea. You’ll have the opportunity to walk across a pedestrian bridge for a closer look at the canal, and for the adventurous, bungee jumping is sometimes available.

Sanctuary of Asklepios - A short drive brings us to one of the most significant ancient sanctuaries dedicated to Asclepius, the god of healing and medicine. This sanctuary is set in a picturesque, hilly landscape.

The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus - The highlight here is the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, the best-preserved ancient Greek theater from the 4th century B.C.E. Its remarkable acoustics are still impressive today. Climb to the upper seats, close your eyes, and imagine witnessing an ancient Greek tragedy.

Archaeological Site Mycenae - Next, we visit Mycenae, a UNESCO World Heritage site dating back to the 2nd millennium B.C.E. This site is associated with the era of Achilles, Agamemnon, and Helen of Troy. Explore the cyclopean walls, the burial circle A, and the remnants of Agamemnon’s Palace.

Lion Gate - At Mycenae, you’ll see the famous Lion Gate, the oldest monumental sculpture in Europe.

Archaeological Museum of Ancient Mycenae - The modern museum here showcases the treasures of the “City of Gold.”

Citadel and Treasury of Atreus - Before leaving, we’ll stop at the Treasury of Atreus, the best-preserved tholos tomb and a prime example of Mycenaean architecture.

Nafplio - We then head to Nafplion, a city rich in more recent Greek history. Once the capital of Greece until 1834, Nafplion is known for its scenic beauty, fortresses, and castles (Palamidi, Bourtzi), a vast harbor open to the Aegean Sea, and unique architecture blending Venetian, neoclassical, and oriental styles. After exploring the picturesque old town, we’ll enjoy lunch at a traditional seaside tavern and stay overnight.

Acronauplia - We’ll drive up to the Acronafplia castle for a panoramic view of Nafplio.

Bourtzi - Bourtzi is a small islet with a fortress in a large port open to the Aegean Sea.

Mystras - Sparta

Mystras - We travel to Mystras through the mountainous landscape of the southern Peloponnese. Known as the ghost city, Mystras is a fortified citadel preserving medieval churches, houses, mansions, and palaces from the Byzantine Empire, combined with Frankish elements.

Archaeological Site of Mystra - At the site, you’ll reach the citadel for stunning views and then descend to see the palaces and royal courtyards. Despite being called a ghost city, many monasteries are still active, and monks are happy to show you around. Before exiting, you’ll find the chapel of St. Demetrios, where the last Byzantine emperor, Konstantine Palaiologos, was crowned.

Acropolis and Ancient Theater - Next, we visit Sparta, the eternal rival of Athens. Known for its military society, Sparta was the birthplace of Helen of Troy and the kingdom of Menelaus during the Mycenaean period. It was also the city of King Leonidas and his 300 Spartans who fought at Thermopylae in 480 B.C.E.

Leonidas Monument - We’ll pass by the stadium where the statue of King Leonidas stands, marking the end of the Spartathlon race (Athens – Sparta 245.3 km).

Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil - Our visit to the museum will provide fascinating insights into Greek olives and olive oil.

Monemvasia

Monemvasia Fortress - Monemvasia is a living old city on an island connected to the mainland. This Byzantine fortress city still thrives, with narrow streets, mansions, houses, churches, walls, gates, and a citadel. We’ll spend half a day here, enjoying lunch by the sea and exploring the city’s many points of interest.

Agia Sofia Church - Agia Sofia, the main sanctuary in Monemvasia’s upper town, is a large Byzantine church perched on a cliff with breathtaking views of the bay. Inside, you’ll find a serene atmosphere, an impressive dome, finely sculpted marble capitals, and fragments of 13th-century frescoes.

Gytheio - Diros Cave - Areopoli

Gytheio - Located in the southern Peloponnese, Gytheio is a port town known for its excellent fish restaurants and ouzeries. The town features beautiful old buildings from the last two centuries, neo-classical houses, shops, and stunning old apartment buildings that cascade down Mount Koumaros to the sea, evoking a bygone era of Greek ports.

Caves of Diros - Just 10 km from Gytheio and 5 km from Pyrgos Dirou, the Diros Caves offer a unique experience. These caves, including Alepotrypa, Katafigi, and Glyfada, feature a subterranean river stretching 1,600 meters. The colorful stalactites and stalagmites create a magical spectacle. Ongoing research has extended the known length of the caves to 6,500 meters, with more yet to be discovered.

Areopoli - Named after Ares, the ancient Greek god of war, Areopoli became its official name in 1912. It was the starting point of the Greek War of Independence on March 17, 1821, led by Petros Pierrakos (Petros Mavromichalis), the last bey of Mani. Today, Areopoli is a thriving town with distinctive tower houses made of field stones, unlike the traditional blue and white buildings of many Greek villages.

Kardamili - Kalamata - Messini

Kardamili - Kardamili is a charming, historic coastal village in Messiniaki Mani, located 35 km southeast of Kalamata. Visitors can admire lush mountainsides, olive groves, beautiful beaches, traditional stone mansions, verdant gardens, and a picturesque small port.

Kalamata - Kalamata is the second-largest city in the Peloponnese, after Patras, and the largest city in the Messenia region. Situated along the Nedon River at the head of the Messenian Gulf, Kalamata is famous for the Kalamatianos dance and Kalamata olives.

Olympia - We will spend the night in Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games.

Olympia - Nafpaktos - Arachova

Archaeological Site of Olympia - We will explore the archaeological site and museum of Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games and the Sanctuary of Olympian Zeus. Highlights include the Gymnasium, Palaistra, Phidias’ workshop, the Temple of Zeus, and the Stadium where ancient Greeks competed for glory and honor.

Archaeological Museum of Olympia - The museum houses the famous statue “Hermes of Praxiteles” and tools used by Phidias to create the gold and ivory statue of Zeus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

Museum of the Olympic Games - This museum showcases 463 ancient artifacts from the Temple of Zeus and other Greek museums, covering the history of the Olympic Games from the 2nd millennium B.C. to the 5th century A.D. Visitors can learn about the ancient games through thematic exhibits and rich visual material. After exploring, we’ll have lunch in the village.

Nafpaktos Old Port - Nafpaktos, also known as Lepanto, is a town with a rich history as a strategic naval station during the Peloponnesian War. It changed hands many times during the Crusades and Ottoman–Venetian Wars. The town was under Venetian control in the 15th century and later became an Ottoman naval station. The Battle of Lepanto in 1571 was a decisive victory for the Holy League. Nafpaktos remained under Ottoman control until Greek independence in 1829.

Arachova - Arachova is a picturesque mountain village at the foot of Mt. Parnassos in Viotia, Southern Greece. It is a popular winter destination known for its modern ski resort, vibrant nightlife, and proximity to Athens. The breathtaking mountainous landscape and modern tourism facilities make it a favorite among visitors.

Delphi - Distomo - Livadia

Delphi - We will visit Delphi, an ancient Greek sanctuary dedicated to Apollo. Known as the “navel” of the world, Delphi was a symbol of Greek cultural unity. The scenic location offers views of the Greek mountains and nearby sites like the Gymnasium and the secondary sanctuary of Athena Pronea.

Temple of Apollo - At Delphi, you’ll see the Temple of Apollo, where the Pythia delivered oracles, as well as the theater and stadium.

Delphi Archaeological Museum - The museum features the famous charioteer statue and gold ivory statues.

Monastery of Hosios Loukas - We will visit the Monastery of Hosios Loukas, which showcases the second golden age of Byzantine art (11th-12th century) with its golden mosaics and fine architecture.

Livadia - Livadia, with about 30,000 residents, is situated at the edge of the Kopaida plain, surrounded by mountains. The old town of Livadia (Mideia) lies at the foot of these mountains. This unique Greek city has a rich history and mythology that has inspired artists for centuries. We’ll enjoy lunch or coffee by the famous river and Krya Springs.

Athens - Finally, we will return to Athens.
