Additional Information

In 79 A.D., the eruption of Mount Vesuvius entombed more than just Pompeii. A stone’s throw away on the coastline, was another city - Herculaneum. This urban area, akin to Pompeii, was simultaneously destroyed and conserved by the catastrophe. Herculaneum was concealed beneath an actual mountain of searing ashes, with the remains of the antique city submerged under 80 feet of volcanic debris.

Fast forward nearly two millennia, the allure of Herculaneum endures. This locale served as a residential precinct for the high-ranking class, despite being smaller, it was wealthier than Pompeii. The past prosperity of Herculaneum is still apparent in the unique design and ornate adornments of the residences.

There’s a disparity between Herculaneum and Pompeii in terms of preservation. Both cities perished in the same eruption, however, the impact varied on each.

Marvellous tour! - We had a wonderful tour at Herculaneum. Francesco organized this tour superb and Marzia gave us a marvellous tour through the ruins. The tour provided a good overview and many information, Marzia spiced it with archeological knowledge, excellent linguistic explanations, and anecdotes. The excavated frescos are simply breathtaking and the entire scenery is even more touching emotionally than Pompeji. Thanks!

Great for families - Perfect short tour for a family with 2 kids (ages 8 and 13). Herculaneum is large and small enough to see in 2 hours. Mariza was a great resource of information and made it engaging and interesting. I'd recommend this over Pompeii in the summer as the crowds are much smaller and there's more shade. Plus, it's better preserved! I'd recommend this tour to anyone short on time and focus (like our kids).

Great visit and excellent tour of Herculaneum! - We had a brilliant tour of Herculaneum with Marzia. Before the tour the communication was excellent with the team and they made meeting very easy, Marzia answered all our questions with interesting insight and showed us all the fascinating highlights of Herculaneum. We highly recommend a trip to Herculaneum and this private tour as the best way to see it and find out about the history!

Antonella Fan Club - Days before the trip, Francesco reached out letting us know that he had to cancel and after communicating back and forth with him about options of changing the tour time and date, we decided to let him replace himself with Antonella. SHE WAS AMAZING. Our family LOVED her! Because it’s a private tour, we were able to go at a slower pace AND ask questions. She was knowledgeable, personable, charismatic, and kind. I would recommend Antonella to anyone who needs a guide. And as for my contact with Francesco, he was a wonderful contact and I’m really thankful he was communicating fully with us. As for touring Herculaneum, do it.

A fantastic tour - My wife and I booked this tour before we started our holiday. A couple of days before the tour was scheduled Francesco sent me a WhatsApp informing me we were the only people on the tour and the tour would be cancelled as no other bookings had been made. He offered us the opportunity of a private tour for an additional cost. At this point I did look at other options, but decided to stick with this tour as it had the best reviews. I'm glad I did for two reasons. Firstly, the day before the tour Francesco informed us there had been another booking and it would go ahead at the original price. Secondly, Umberto, our tour guide, was brilliant. He was a very friendly, enthusiastic and informative guide, pointing out lots of interesting archeological features we probably would have missed on our own. In the two hours we covered a lot of Herculaneum and Umberto gave us some tips on other points of interest which were well worth seeing too. All in all, a fantastic small group tour (just four in total) which was well worth the money.

Go On Your Own - We were on this tour coming from a cruise ship. The tour bus had to pickup different groups at different meeting points. The last group was very late and ate up our touring time. Additionally, the van barely had any AC and it was near 100 degs F and humid. When we arrived at Herculaneum, we had to wait for yet another group of people another 20 or 30 mins, again eating at the time before we had to return to the ship. While the guide was extremely knowledgeable, she spent way too much time providing many, many details, comparing Pompeii to Herculaneum at each spot. So much so, that we were not able to see the entire site bc we had to get on the bus back to the ship. Also, the heat was too much for others, while she stayed in 1 spot talking too long, and they ended up going back to the air conditioned entry bldg, not seeing even a third of the site. We wanted to learn about Herculaneum, NOT Pompeii. Otherwise, we would have done that tour! Advice is to just go on your own and not pay the tour price.
