From Surf to Summit: Conquering Pacaya Volcano’s Petrified Lava
When the waves are calm and the surfboards are resting, it’s time to explore the land. Join me as I recount my trek up the active Pacaya Volcano in Guatemala, where a rocky start turned into an unforgettable adventure.
A Rocky Start
The day began with a bit of a hiccup. I had confirmed a 7 A.M. pick-up time the night before, but as the sun rose over the lush Guatemalan landscape, I found myself waiting for a ride that seemed to have forgotten me. After 35 minutes of anticipation, I retreated to my hotel room, only to be summoned back by a call from the front desk at 7:50. My ride had arrived, and I was finally on my way to the Pacaya Volcano Tour!
Despite the initial delay, the journey to the Pacaya Volcano was smooth and comfortable. Our driver, Michael, was a gem—friendly and professional, he navigated the roads with ease. The vehicle was top-notch, setting the tone for what promised to be an unforgettable adventure.
The Ascent
Upon arrival at the Pacaya Volcano National Park, we were greeted by Walter, our guide for the day. Walter was nothing short of amazing. His knowledge of the area was impressive, and his ability to switch between Spanish and English made the tour accessible for everyone. My friend, a fellow adventurer from Nicaragua, appreciated the Spanish commentary, while I was grateful for Walter’s English translations.
The trek up the volcano was a feast for the senses. The path wound through lush greenery, with the distant rumble of the active volcano serving as a constant reminder of nature’s power. As we ascended, the views became more breathtaking, each step revealing a new perspective of the surrounding landscape.
The Lava Walk
Reaching the area of petrified lava was like stepping onto another planet. The stark contrast between the blackened rock and the vibrant greenery was mesmerizing. Walter explained the geological history of the area, painting a vivid picture of the forces that shaped this unique landscape.
Standing on the hardened lava, I felt a profound connection to the earth beneath my feet. The active crater loomed in the distance, a testament to the ever-changing nature of our planet. It was a humbling experience, one that reminded me of the raw beauty and power of the natural world.
As we made our way back down the volcano, I couldn’t help but reflect on the day’s adventure. Despite the rocky start, the Pacaya Volcano Tour had exceeded my expectations. The combination of stunning views, expert guidance, and the thrill of walking on petrified lava made for an unforgettable experience. If you find yourself in Guatemala, this is one adventure you won’t want to miss.
