Locals refer to the lake as ‘Dzhasyl-Kul’, meaning ‘Green lake.’ The lake’s official name, “Issyk”, is a modified version of the Kazakh word Esik, translating to “door”. Notably, the town situated below the lake goes by the same name, Esik.

Geologists believe the lake was formed 8,000 years ago due to a massive mountain avalanche, which then resulted in a natural dam with a height of 300 meters.

Located in the gorge of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains, Lake Issyk sits at an elevation of 1750 m.
