Highlights
  • Temple of Khnum - The Temple of Khnum is an ancient Egyptian temple in the city of Esna in Luxor Governorate, Upper Egypt, approximately 55 kilometers south of Luxor. It was originally known as Hout-Khenmu (“House of Khnum”) in ancient Egyptian. The only remaining part of the temple is the pronaos, the vestibule of the temple. This hall, supported by 24 columns and featuring an intact roof, is situated in the city center, 200 meters west of the Nile River.

The Temple of Khnum was dedicated to the ancient Egyptian god Khnum, who was believed to be the creator of both male and female deities. In his form as Khnum-hapi, he rejuvenated the Nile’s springs annually, causing the Nile Flood. Additionally, his wife Menhit, the city goddess Neptu, and the gods Heka and Neit were also venerated here. The open-air temple is located nine meters below street level in Esna, within an excavated area. Stairs provide access to the temple entrance.
