Sailing to Serenity: A Day on Saona Island
Drawn by the allure of untouched beaches and the promise of adventure, I embarked on a day trip to Saona Island. Join me as I explore the island’s natural beauty and share the highlights of this unforgettable journey.
Setting Sail to Saona Island
The sun was just beginning to rise as I found myself on a 90-minute drive to Bayahibe Beach, the starting point of my Saona Island adventure. The anticipation was palpable, and the journey through the lush Dominican landscape was a serene prelude to the day ahead. As a former professional surfer, the call of the ocean is something I can never resist, and the promise of exploring a virgin island was too tempting to pass up.
Upon arrival at Bayahibe Beach, the scene was bustling with fellow adventurers, all eager to embark on the speedboat that would whisk us away to our first stop, Playa Palmilla. The wait on the beach was filled with chatter and the occasional photo opportunity, though I quickly learned that the promised free photo was more of a souvenir option than a gift. No matter, the real treasure awaited us on the water.
Discovering Playa Palmilla
The speedboat ride to Playa Palmilla was a thrilling experience, the wind whipping through my hair as we sped across the azure waters. Playa Palmilla, with its natural swimming pool, was a sight to behold. The water was a crystalline blue, shallow enough to wade through, and the perfect spot to soak in the sun and the stunning scenery.
Though our time at Playa Palmilla was shorter than expected, it was a delightful interlude. The drinks began to flow, and the atmosphere was one of relaxed enjoyment. As someone who thrives on the ocean’s energy, I relished the chance to swim and explore the coral terrace that separated the natural pool from the open sea.
The Allure of Saona Island
Our next destination was the crown jewel of the trip, Saona Island. The island’s pristine beaches and lush palm trees were a paradise for any ocean lover. Here, I indulged in a leisurely swim, followed by a sumptuous buffet lunch that offered a taste of the local cuisine. The unlimited drinks were a welcome addition, and I found myself lost in the island’s tranquil beauty.
The transition from the speedboat to the catamaran was an unexpected twist, but it added a layer of adventure to the day. Joining another group on the catamaran felt a bit like crashing a party, but the camaraderie of fellow travelers made it a memorable experience. As we sailed back, the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the water.
The return journey was a mix of reflection and relaxation, the perfect end to a day filled with exploration and discovery. Saona Island had lived up to its reputation, offering a glimpse of the untouched beauty that the Caribbean is known for. For anyone with a love for the ocean and a spirit of adventure, this day trip is a must-do.
