Savor the outdoor-grilled sardines at the petite eateries lining the port, then explore the Port’s Scala, a fortified bastion crafted to safeguard the harbor and city. It includes two reinforced wings positioned behind the Navy entrance. On exiting the port Scala, make your way to Moulay Hassan square. Find the kasbah, a region encompassed by walls with foundations deeply embedded in the rock. Stroll along the street leading to the Kasbah’s Scala, home to Essaouira’s famed cannons. Orson Welles selected this spot for the outdoor scenes in his Othello.
Nestled within the Kasbah is the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions, a reflection and collective archive of Essaouira province’s history. Here, you can see the sacred and secular musical instruments of the Assaoua, Hamadcha, and Gnaoua fraternities. Every June, this city hosts the globally celebrated Essaouira Gnaoua Festival.
