• Essaouira Fishing Port - At the port, our first food stop awaits shellfish enthusiasts; it’s time to savor mussels and oysters with lemon.
• Place Moullay Hassan - Our second stop is the main Moulay Hassan square, the gateway to the Kasbah and the Medina, with a brief pause by the fish grilling stalls.
• Galerie la Kasbah - Next, we head towards the second scala of the kasbah, offering a stunning view over the rooftops of the old city and the purple islands. On our way, we’ll make a stop to enjoy Moroccan pastries, especially the famous gazelle horns, at one of the historic pastry shops from 1928, originally run by Maalem DRISS and now managed by his son Zakaria.
• Mellah - After visiting the scala, we proceed to the Jewish quarter (the mellah), exploring narrow alleys and old doorways. Before reaching the mellah, we’ll discover local cedar wood marquetry, a craft unique to this region, using the fragrant Thuya wood. Our third stop will be to taste Moroccan crepes, a local specialty, accompanied by mint tea in the afternoon, after the third prayer.
• Medina of Essaouira - After exploring the mellah and its old houses still bearing the Star of David, we’ll visit local markets featuring meats and olives. Our fourth stop will be to taste candied olives with spicy harissa sauce, a secret of Moroccan cuisine. We’ll also visit the vegetable market to sample some seasonal fruits. After the markets, we’ll explore the heart of the medina, including the fish market where we can buy and grill fish. We’ll then visit the grain square, known as foundouk, a historic hotel for caravans from Timbuktu trading at the port of Essaouira in the 18th century. Finally, we’ll explore the lively afternoon flea market (joutia).
