Highlights

Semera to Erte Ale

Danakil Depression - Departing from Semera around 10am, you’ll head to Dodom through Abala, known as The Gate of Danakil Depression. This trip takes approximately 3 hours by 4x4 vehicle. En route, you’ll pause to take in the stunning views and otherworldly landscapes.

Erta Ale - In the late afternoon or early evening, you’ll embark on a trek from Dodom to the Erta Ale Volcano. The hike covers about 10 miles and takes 3-4 hours, depending on your fitness level. Erta Ale is one of Africa’s most active volcanoes and features a remarkable permanent lava lake. We’ll set up camp near the volcano’s rim (with camping gear and food transported by camels) so you can enjoy breathtaking views of the lava lake.

Erte Ale to Lake Assal

Lake Assale - In the evening, we’ll establish a campsite near Lake Assal, offering an opportunity to capture a magical sunset over the lake.

Lake Assal to Semera

Dallol - From Lake Assal, you’ll drive to Ragad to witness salt mining in action. Here, local Afar tribe members carve salt from the ground, shape it into slabs, and load it onto camels for market transport. You’ll then proceed to Dallol, where the vibrant, multi-colored landscape appears almost otherworldly. From Dallol, you’ll drive back to Semera, passing through Hamd Ela.
