Bale Mountain Trekking - I made a 5 day excursion from the capital Addis to the South East region (Bale Mountains, SofOmar). On the way, the closer I came to the Bale region, the more animals were visible along the main road from inside the car: monkeys, wart hogs, antelopes, many different birds. Perfect for taking pictures. The central Bale mountains are an experience of its own: Afro-alpine grassland, barren landscapes, thick alpine rain forests, peaks and plateaus, and plenty of endemic wildlife (rare birds, endemic giant rats, …). I made several hikes to the most beautiful spots although there are several camping opportunities in the Bale Mountains. For an extraordinary outdoor adventure, all camping material is available and can be rented. Local guides are available and can fulfill all special requests for the most impressive experience. The trip included a day excursion to the Sof Omar cave (~100 km), the largest underground cave system in Africa. It contains huge domes, clean waters, and we walked inside with local guides for 2-3 hours. It is an amazing landscape with very friendly local people. Overall Summary: I was very satisfied with the trip. In just a few days one can see all the beautiful landscapes of Ethiopia: from the very dry and hot areas in the Rift valley with its many fascinating lakes (some lakes have boiling hot springs) to lots of green hills and alpine plateaus around Bale. The driver and the guides acted responsible and trustful, and all attractions could be visited completely hassle-free.
