Fly From Addis Ababa to Semara

Danakil Depression - Day 1:
Begin the adventure with a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera, followed by a drive to Erta Ale, known as “smoky mountain” in the Afar language. Erta Ale is one of Ethiopia’s most captivating and physically demanding natural wonders. It is a shield volcano with a base diameter of 30 km and a 1 km square caldera at its peak. Erta Ale boasts the world’s only permanent lava lake, standing at 613 meters, and is one of only five such lakes globally. It is renowned for being the longest-existing lava lake, present since the early 20th century. Dinner is served around 17:00. After a brief rest, embark on a trek to Erta Ale at 20:00. Camels will carry all camping gear and some provisions (such as light mattresses, mats, and water) to the volcano’s rim, where the night will be spent observing the mesmerizing lava activity. Overnight stay will be at the volcano’s rim.

Danakil Depression - Day 2:
Witness the early morning sunrise at the northern pit crater, then take a short walk to the southern and central pits, which may be ancient pits or simple collapse structures. The main pit-crater is 200 meters deep and 350 meters across, sub-circular, and three-tiered. The smaller southern pit is 65 meters wide and about 100 meters deep. Descend from Erta Ale around 9 am and head back to Dodom after an early breakfast, ideally by 07:00. Arrival at the camp is expected by 10:30, where relaxation awaits. Drive to the mythical Lake Giulietti (or Lake Afrera), a saltwater lake over 100 meters below sea level, in one of the planet’s deepest depressions. Due to the stunning landscape, visit the salt flats where the Afar people harvest salt by evaporating lake water. Continue to Erbiti and proceed to Abaala/Hamed Ela. Overnight stay at Hamed Ela.

Return Flight to Addis Ababa

Mek’ele - Day 3:
Start the day with a drive to Ragad (Asebo), where locals mine salt. Observe workers breaking salt from the ground, cutting it into rectangular pieces, and loading it onto camels. Continue to Dallol to explore the unique landscape shaped by volcanic activity, including Dallol, Lake Assal, and camel caravans. Take an excursion to Dallol (116 meters below sea level, one of the world’s lowest places) to see colorful salt mining, visit Lake Assal, and follow camel caravans (note: no camel caravans in July, August, and early September) while walking with the Afar people. Drive back to Hamed Ela and proceed to Semera/Mekelle, then fly back to Addis Ababa.
