Exploring Windsor: A Royal Journey Through Time
Drawn by the allure of Windsor Castle’s storied past, I embarked on a journey to explore its 900 years of royal history. Join me as I recount the experience, from the informative drive to the majestic castle grounds.
A Journey Through Time: The Drive to Windsor
As a former professor of European history, I have always been drawn to the stories that ancient structures tell. My recent visit to Windsor Castle was no exception. My wife and I embarked on this journey with a sense of anticipation, eager to explore the 900 years of royal history that awaited us. Our driver, Sukh Tel, was a delightful companion on this journey. His punctuality and friendly demeanor set the tone for the day. As we drove through the picturesque English countryside, Sukh regaled us with tales of the past, weaving a narrative that brought the landscape to life. The car was immaculate, a small detail that added to the overall comfort of our trip. Sukh’s communication was impeccable, ensuring that we felt well-cared for throughout the journey.
The Majesty of Windsor Castle
Upon arriving at Windsor Castle, the sheer scale and grandeur of the estate took my breath away. As the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, it stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the British monarchy. Founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, the castle has been home to 39 monarchs. Our exploration began with the State Apartments, where the opulence of the interiors was matched only by the rich history they contained. Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, a marvel of miniature craftsmanship, was a particular highlight. St. George’s Chapel, with its stunning Gothic architecture, served as a poignant reminder of the castle’s role as a royal burial site. The chapel’s serene atmosphere invited reflection on the lives of the ten monarchs interred within its walls.
A Stroll Down the Long Walk
One of the unexpected delights of our visit was a stroll down the Long Walk, a magnificent tree-lined avenue that stretches for nearly three miles. Sukh, ever attentive to our interests, made sure to include this in our itinerary. The Long Walk offered a perfect vantage point to admire the castle’s imposing silhouette against the sky. It was here that Sukh captured a cherished photograph of my wife and me, a memento of a day steeped in history and beauty. As we walked, I couldn’t help but reflect on the countless figures who had traversed this path before us, from kings and queens to ordinary visitors like ourselves. This experience, rich in historical context and personal connection, is one I would highly recommend to anyone with a passion for history and architecture. Windsor Castle Tour
