- Centro Histórico de Évora - From the ancient “Temple of Diana” near the Évora Cathedral, built during the Roman era, one can admire the magnificent “Água da Prata” aqueduct. This structure extends from outside the city walls to the outskirts, with some arches still visible within the city. Constructed in the 16th century, it was designed to facilitate water transportation.
The Arabs constructed their streets and alleys in the 11th and 12th centuries. Évora served as the residence for some Portuguese kings and was a hub for renowned artists, supported by the patronage of the reigning dynasty in Portugal. The Age of Discoveries brought glory to Évora, fostering the construction of numerous aristocratic mansions, including the Jesuit university.
The highlight is the Church of San Francisco, particularly the Chapel of Bones, adorned with the skulls and bones of 500 monks. It attracts thousands of visitors annually, with the entrance proclaiming, “We bones, here we are, for yours we will wait.”
Enjoy some free time for lunch.
- Monsaraz Castle and Walls - Monsaraz is a charming medieval village with narrow stone streets and white-painted houses, adding a special allure to the village and its residents. Passing through its walls transports visitors back to medieval times, surrounded by vast plains and the Alqueva, which separates Portugal and Spain.
- Ervideira - Experience a visit and tasting at a local winery. Alentejo wine boasts a unique profile, seemingly impossible in a region with a hot and dry climate, necessitating the addition of water to the vines. The sunny area, with its soils and reliefs, allows for perfect grape maturation.
This predominantly flat region produces white wines that are generally soft, slightly acidic, and have tropical fruit aromas. The red wines are full-bodied, rich in tannins, and have aromas of wild and red fruits.
The tour includes a visit to one of these wineries for a tasting, with the choice depending on the winery’s schedule, potentially including Ervideira, among others.
Return to Lisbon.
- Templo Romano de Évora (Temple of Diana) - The Roman Temple of Évora (Temple of Diana) is a breathtaking 1st-century monument and UNESCO site. Its Corinthian columns are the best-preserved Roman ruins in Portugal, making it an absolute must-see.
