Highlights
  • Praca do Giraldo - This square, dating back to the 14th century, serves as the city’s core and a spot where tourists soak in the laid-back vibe. It once housed the old town hall, which was later torn down to make way for the church of Santo Antão. In the 16th century, the square was named after the Portuguese explorer Giraldo Sem Pavor. The square also features the magnificent 16th-century Palácio de Dom Manuel, a stunning example of the transition from Gothic to Renaissance architecture.
  • Banco de Portugal - Agência de Évora - The Banco de Portugal is among the most photographed buildings in the city. Évora saw numerous urban changes in the 19th century, some of which had debatable outcomes. This site once held the prison and the old town hall, now replaced by the Banco de Portugal branch.
  • Igreja de Sao Francisco - We pass by the Igreja de São Francisco. Sadly, little remains of the original church, constructed in 1224 by the Franciscan Order. It was a very simple structure, devoid of decoration or luxurious materials.

At the end of the 15th century, when Portugal was a global trading power, this church was lavishly renovated. The opulence is still evident inside. Today, the church symbolizes the economic might Portugal once had. Feel free to explore inside; it’s free of charge.

  • Evora Public Garden - This park features a statue of Vasco de Gama and the royal palace.
  • Royal Palace of Évora - Also known as the Royal Palace of São Francisco and the Palace of King Manuel I, this former royal residence of Portuguese kings is located in Évora, the capital of Alentejo. The palace originated from a 13th-century monastery. The royal family resided here for a long time, and in 1865, it was converted into an archaeological museum. Integrated into the garden, it stands as one of the city’s most beautiful buildings.
  • Travessa do Barão - We stroll through the heart of the Jewish Quarter, once one of Portugal’s largest and wealthiest Jewish neighborhoods.
  • Rua Serpa Pinto - We walk along the 6 km long wall of Évora, offering a great way to get a feel for the city. The oldest section of the wall dates back to the third century.
  • Aqueduct - The Agua de Prata Aqueduct stretches 18 km, with the highest arch reaching 26 meters. It was connected to the fountain on Praça do Giraldo.
  • Cadaval Palace (Evora) - Located opposite the Roman temple, the Cadaval Palace is a unique example of the country’s architectural heritage, blending Mudéjar, Gothic, and Manueline styles. Built in the 14th century on the ruins of a Moorish castle, it sits in the heart of Évora.
  • Templo Romano Évora - For 2000 years, the Roman Temple has been Évora’s calling card and remains one of Portugal’s most significant historical ruins.
