Templo Romano de Evora (Templo de Diana) - Roman Temple
Marvel at the Roman Temple, commonly known as Templo Diana, a symbol of Roman occupation in Portugal. Dating back to the 1st century, it stands at the acropolis’s highest point in the city forum. It is one of the best-preserved Roman temples in the Iberian Peninsula and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it the oldest monument in Évora. - Cathedral of Evora (Se Catedral de Evora) - As the largest medieval cathedral in Portugal, its construction began in 1186 on the site of an Arab mosque. It exemplifies the transition from Romanesque to Gothic style and was declared a National Monument in 1910.
- Praca do Giraldo - This location was the site of numerous autos-da-fé (rituals of public penance) during the Inquisition. It has a rectangular shape, and the surrounding houses are white with medieval arches.
- Igreja de Sao Francisco - Constructed in the 15th and 16th centuries in Manueline-Mudejar and Renaissance styles, it replaced an earlier Gothic temple, remnants of which still exist. Adjacent to the Royal Palace, it was considered a Royal Church, hosting significant ceremonies like the marriage of Prince Afonso to Isabel of Castilla in 1490. The interior features a single nave, rectangular in shape and in the form of a Latin cross, highlighting the Baroque high altar and the Third Order of Saint Francis Chapel. The Chapel of Bones, with three naves completely covered in human bones (17th century), is a major attraction.
- Capela dos Ossos - Be captivated by one of Portugal’s most intriguing monuments: The Chapel of Bones, built in the 17th century. Upon entering, observe the foreboding message meant to prompt reflection on life’s transience: “We bones that are here, await yours.” The chapel, with three naves, is adorned with bones and skulls from 5,000 skeletons from church and convent cemeteries throughout the city.
- Monsaraz Castle and Walls - This village, encircled by walls, retains a medieval charm, with streets that create a unique atmosphere as if Monsaraz is frozen in time. Upon arrival, discover a magnificent architectural ensemble protected by medieval walls built during the reigns of D. Afonso III (13th century) and D. Dinis (14th century). Exploring narrow streets, sunny corners, or high points like the Belfry and the Torre das Feiticeiras (The Tower of the Witches), one of the five towers of this military monument, offers a sense of wonder and surprise, enhanced by the beauty of the Great Lake of the Alqueva Dam.
