Rediscovering Cyprus: A Nostalgic Tour Through Troodos Mountains
Drawn by the allure of the Troodos Mountains and the promise of exploring quaint villages and cascading waterfalls, I embarked on a full-day tour from Larnaca. Join me as I recount the enchanting journey through Cyprus’s green heart.
A Journey Through Time: The Cyprus Railways Museum
As the train gently rolled into the village of Evrychou, I felt a familiar sense of nostalgia wash over me. The Cyprus Railways Museum, housed in a beautifully restored train station, was our first stop on this enchanting tour. The museum, surrounded by a charming rose garden, was a treasure trove of history. Photographs, old tickets, and train schedules whispered stories of a bygone era, each artifact a testament to the island’s rich railway heritage.
Our guide, Dimitrios, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing tales of the railway’s glory days. As I wandered through the exhibits, I couldn’t help but reminisce about my own youthful adventures on the rails. The museum was a delightful detour from the original itinerary, and I was grateful for the flexibility that allowed us to explore this hidden gem.
The Allure of the Troodos Mountains
Leaving the museum behind, we ventured into the heart of the Troodos Mountains. The air was crisp and invigorating, a refreshing change from the bustling city life. Our journey took us to the Millomeris Waterfall, a serene spot nestled within the lush greenery. Though not as grand as the Caledonian Falls, the gentle cascade of water was a soothing sight.
The path to the waterfall was an easy stroll, perfect for those who prefer a leisurely pace. As we walked, Dimitrios regaled us with stories of the region’s unique geology, where oceanic crust can be studied without venturing into the sea. The mountains, with their majestic beauty, were a reminder of nature’s timeless allure.
A Taste of Tradition in Omodos
Our final destination was the quaint village of Omodos, renowned for its wine and traditional crafts. The cobblestone streets and rustic charm of the village transported me back to simpler times. We enjoyed a sumptuous meal at Kaledonia Taverna in Pano Platres, where the portions were generous and the flavors exquisite.
With some free time to explore, I wandered through the village, savoring the sights and sounds. The aroma of freshly baked ‘arkatena’ bread wafted through the air, and I couldn’t resist purchasing a loaf to take home. As the day drew to a close, we made an impromptu stop at the fish marina in Zygi, a fitting end to a day filled with discovery and delight.
This Troodos Adventure was a journey that rekindled my love for exploration and the simple joys of travel. Each stop was a chapter in a story that unfolded with grace and charm, leaving me with memories to cherish for years to come.
