Island-Hopping Bliss: A Day in the Exumas
When the ocean calls, I answer. This time, it led me to the Exumas for a day of island-hopping, swimming with pigs, and snorkeling around a sunken plane. Join me as I recount the thrill of exploring the Caribbean’s hidden gems.
Setting Sail on a Caribbean Adventure
The sun was just beginning to rise as I found myself boarding a powerboat in Nassau, ready to embark on a full-day trip to the Exumas. The air was filled with the promise of adventure, and I could feel the familiar thrill of the ocean calling to me. As a former professional surfer, the sea has always been my playground, and today was no exception. The boat, operated by Shore Thing Escapes, was unlike any other I’d seen. With its unique seating arrangement, I found myself in the second row at the front, enjoying an unobstructed view of the horizon. The wind whipped through my hair, and the music from the high-end sound system set the perfect tone for the day ahead.
Our first stop was Allens Cay, home to the protected Exuma Rock Iguanas. These fascinating creatures roamed freely, and it was a joy to see them in their natural habitat. The journey to the cay was a mere 50 minutes, a testament to the efficiency of traveling by powerboat. As we sped across the azure waters, I couldn’t help but appreciate the beauty of the Caribbean, a place I am fortunate enough to call home.
Swimming with Pigs and Sharks
Next on our itinerary was the famous Pig Beach, where the world-renowned swimming pigs awaited. Armed with carrots and bread, I joined the other guests in feeding these charming animals. Their playful antics brought smiles to everyone’s faces, and it was a delight to interact with them in such a unique setting. The camaraderie among the guests was palpable, and it felt as though we were all part of one big island family.
Our adventure continued at Compass Cay, where we had the opportunity to swim with nurse sharks. These majestic creatures, often misunderstood, were gentle and docile, allowing us to get up close and personal. It was an experience that left a lasting impression, and I couldn’t help but marvel at the wonders of the ocean. The crew, always smiling and laughing, joined us in the water, making the experience feel less like a tour and more like a day out with friends.
A Taste of Bahamian Culture
As the day progressed, we made our way to Black Point for an authentic Bahamian lunch. The backdrop was breathtaking, and the food was a delicious blend of local flavors. From fish to BBQ pork ribs, the meal was a feast for the senses, complemented by a refreshing drink at the bar. After lunch, we took to the clear blue waters, jumping off the dock and swimming to our heart’s content.
Our final stop was a secluded private beach in Exuma, where we were greeted by calm waters and pristine white sand. The sand, made up of tiny crushed shells, was unlike anything I’d ever felt before. As I walked along the shore, my feet sinking into the soft sand, I couldn’t help but reflect on the day’s adventures. The crew, ever the gracious hosts, ensured that we had the time of our lives, and as the sun began to set, I knew that this was a day I would never forget.
The Exuma Day Trip was more than just a tour; it was a journey into the heart of the Caribbean, a place where the ocean’s beauty is matched only by the warmth of its people. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor, this is an experience that promises to leave you with memories to last a lifetime.
