Evening Whirls and Spiritual Journeys
As night falls, the city takes on a mystical quality, and the stage is set for an unforgettable experience. On the evening of November 2nd, make your way to the Kızlarağa Medresesi for the Whirling Dervishes ceremony. This mesmerizing performance is a spiritual journey that transcends the ordinary, offering a glimpse into the mystical world of the Mevlevi Order.
The ceremony, which begins at 7:00 PM, is a profound expression of devotion and spiritual awakening. As the dervishes whirl in perfect harmony, you’ll be captivated by their grace and the haunting melodies of the accompanying musicians. One reviewer noted on 2024-09-24:
Mesmerizing - This was a very short show and it took us almost as long to Uber to the show as the show was long. Our Uber dropped us off a couple blocks away and a kind English speaking gentleman, Faruk, walked us to the show. As we were walking, all of the shop and restauranteurs tried to get us to come in. Faruk said he was friend of the presenters of Whirling Dervishes and made sure we had tickets. I got tickets ahead of time. The show was interesting. The musicians used only 3 instruments and chanted some music. There were 3 Dervishes and it was mesmerizing once they started spinning. One of them looked like he was ill and having trouble keeping it together. He made it through. I’m glad we experienced this show.
For those seeking a deeper understanding of the spiritual significance of the ceremony, the Transcendental Dervish ceremony at the Talat Pasha Mansion offers an intimate and enlightening experience. Held at 6:30 PM on November 3rd, this event invites you to embark on a spiritual quest, witnessing the divine spectacle of the Mevlevi Order’s ritual. A reviewer shared on 2023-03-20:
Cultural event - Highly recommend this event for folks wanting to understand the meaning and practice. Mesmerizing and informative. If wanting something more culturally specific and not “touristy,” this is most appropriate. There are also many restaurants near the venue, literally 10 ft. Grab dinner beforehand and then the hour show. Limited seating and intimate venue. One is just 1-4 ft away from the Dervish. Not for ignorant tourists trying to check off the boxes of an Istanbul trip. The event is spiritual and requires respect from audience. No photography or video.
As you conclude your weekend in Fatih, Istanbul, you’ll carry with you the memories of a journey steeped in history, culture, and spiritual discovery. This enchanting city has a way of leaving an indelible mark on the soul, inviting you to return time and again to explore its endless wonders.
