- Hagia Sophia Mosque - First, we’ll begin at Sultanahmet Square, a vibrant area steeped in history. Our first stop is the Hagia Sophia, a stunning architectural marvel. As we step inside, you’ll be captivated by the massive dome and the intricate mosaics that tell stories of its past as a church, mosque, and now museum.
- Hippodrome - Next, we’ll take a short walk to the German Fountain, a beautiful gazebo-style fountain gifted by the German Emperor Wilhelm II. We’ll spend a few minutes here admiring its exquisite design and mosaics.
Right next to it, we’ll explore the Hippodrome of Constantinople, an ancient chariot-racing stadium. As we stroll through, I’ll point out the Obelisk of Theodosius, the Serpent Column, and the Walled Obelisk, each with their own fascinating stories and historical significance.
- Blue Mosque - Just across the square, we’ll visit the Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque). Here, we’ll admire the beautiful blue İznik tiles that give the mosque its nickname. Don’t forget to look up at the six towering minarets and the impressive central courtyard.
- Gulhane Park - From the Hippodrome, we’ll head to Gulhane Park, a serene escape from the bustling city, located just a 10-minute walk away. Here, we’ll enjoy a peaceful 20-minute stroll amidst lush greenery and maybe catch a glimpse of the Bosphorus. Look out for the ancient Column of the Goths, a testament to the park’s rich history.
- Sirkeci Station - Our journey continues with a 10-minute walk to Sirkeci Station, the historic terminal of the famed Orient Express. We’ll spend some time here appreciating the architectural beauty and the nostalgia of a bygone era.
- MIsIr CarsIsI - Next, we’ll take another 10-minute walk to the Spice Bazaar. As we enter, your senses will be overwhelmed by the vibrant colors and exotic aromas of spices, dried fruits, nuts, and Turkish delights. Take some time to explore the stalls and perhaps pick up a few souvenirs.
- Galata Koprusu - Finally, we’ll head towards the Galata Bridge, a pleasant 10-minute walk from the Spice Bazaar. As we reach the bridge, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn. Watch the local fishermen in action and catch sight of the iconic Galata Tower in the distance.
