- German Fountain - A brief discussion will cover the German Fountain and its historical significance as the starting point for chariot races in the Hippodrome. In the 17th century, Ottoman soldiers returning from war faced non-payment, leading to a tragic event at this site, where an ancient tree once stood.
- Hagia Sophia Mosque - The first stop is near the Hagia Sophia and the Chalke Gate, the former main entrance to the royal palace. Events from the 12th century will be discussed, including the brutal torture of an Emperor and the murder of the royal family. The fall of this Dynasty led to the fourth crusade and the eventual sack of Constantinople.
- Palace Of Antiochos - Once home to the Palace of Lausus, adorned with remarkable classical statuary, it was later converted into a church for a saint martyred during the early 4th-century persecution of Christians.
- Hippodrome - The Hippodrome served as the sporting and social hub of Constantinople, central to the Roman world for over a millennium, second only to the Circus Maximus. It hosted famous chariot races and was a venue for public executions and imperial appearances. It was also the site of one of history’s most horrific massacres.
- Obelisk of Theodosius - These monuments bear witness to world-changing events. Stories of these structures will be shared, including the site of the murdered Komnenian Emperor, whose body lay exposed for three years. In classical times, an unburied body was believed to be a restless spirit trapped between worlds.
- Sphendone Remains - The tour will proceed to the Sphendone’s side, the vaulted remains of the Hippodrome’s south side. Visitors will see the exterior of an ancient prison that once housed wild animals for the circus. Torture methods and the common practice of disfigurement during this era will be discussed.
- Kucuk Ayasofya - Gazi Suleyman Pasa Mosque - Formerly the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, it was renamed the Little Hagia Sophia Mosque under Ottoman rule. Before becoming a church, the area was a palace for Justinian before his 6th-century ascension to Emperor. In the 16th century, a high-ranking eunuch was caught embezzling money and evading taxes, leading to his execution and personal loss.
- Sphendone Remains - The tour continues to the Sphendone’s rear, where stories of the “best seats in the house” and centuries of death will be shared. A successful coup d’état that dethroned a powerful Emperor and the fate of him and his sons above these walls will be recounted.
- Cistern Art Gallery - Depending on the season, the group may enter the cistern or sit outside to hear about the many who were buried inside. During the Plague of Justinian, hundreds of thousands perished, and this site served as one of the final resting places for the black death’s victims.
