- R. Dr. Coelho de Carvalho 8 - The Fort of São João do Arade, also known as the Castle of Arade, is a medieval stronghold. Initially, a watchtower was constructed during the reign of King John II of Portugal. Later, after the establishment of Ferragudo (around 1520), it is believed that the castle was surrounded by a defensive wall, built upon the basic structure of the older walls. The origins of the Fort of Arade trace back to the Philippine Dynasty, serving to protect the peninsula’s coast from pirate and privateer attacks on behalf of the northern European Crowns.
- Ponta do Altar Lighthouse - This uniquely designed lighthouse features a small square turret attached to a single-story caretaker’s house. It supports a red lantern on its terrace. The house, often likened to a small schoolhouse, is painted white with exposed stones and a red-tiled roof. It is situated on a promontory, historically used for pagan rituals, on the eastern side of the entrance to the port of Portimão. The Ponta do Altar Lighthouse was first proposed by Ricardo Peyroteu on June 21, 1884, and began operations on January 1, 1893. The tower stands 10 meters high and 2.7 meters wide. The original light was white and used oil as its fuel source, working in conjunction with two smaller lights at the ends of the two moles at the entrance to Portimão harbor.
- Leixão das Gaivotas - This small islet, covering an area of just 0.16 ha, is designated as an IBA (Important Bird Area) due to its significance as a nesting site for ardeids (herons). This location is particularly fascinating in spring, as it hosts a colony of Cattle Egrets and Little Egrets. During this season, the top of the islet is dotted with white, representing the herons in their nests.
- Torre da Lapa - Torre da Lapa was likely constructed in the 16th century as part of the watchtower system that defended the Algarve coast. For centuries, local men took turns watching the coast from this vantage point, vigilantly observing for corsair ships, primarily from North Africa. In times of danger, a bell was rung, smoke signals were made, or a fire was lit at night to alert people to secure their belongings and lives.
- Farol de Alfanzina - This area features one of the deepest caves. Entering it is a breathtaking experience, possible only when weather conditions are favorable.
- Algar de Benagil - Algar de Benagil is one of the most renowned locations when discussing Algarve beaches, even gaining international press attention. Unsurprisingly, this beach/cave is stunningly beautiful. When conditions permit, entry is possible. Be sure to have your camera ready!
