We got a great guide - Was recommended to Mohammed by a fellow traveller. He was so helpful. Even prior to the tour recommendations where to park our motorhome, a lovely restaurant. He was very accommodating about time as my partner is having cancer treatment so his flexibility was greatly appreciated. And everyone knows him and obviously respects him in the area, he’s been walking these streets for many years so knows everything you will need. Great comms via what’s app. Thanks Mohammed for a nice tour.

We loved spending time with Mohammed and can’t wait to come back and see him again !

Reliable cultural knowledge, but involved in deceptive sales practices. - Initially, we were impressed by Mohammed. He is personable, funny, and knowledgeable about every corner of the Medina. He gave us fascinating architectural and cultural insights, showed us hidden gems, and ended the day at a beautiful rooftop restaurant. At first, we felt we had found the trustworthy guide everyone recommends in Fez. However, this impression did not last. Mohammed started the tour by telling us that his main goal was to support local artisans and avoid scams or imported goods made with child labor. He promised authentic, handmade Moroccan products from cooperatives. To reinforce this claim, he arranged for us to visit a workshop where we witnessed the process of making "unique handcrafted items." The artisans showed their craft, and we were told their products were truly one-of-a-kind. He also taught us the local sport: bargaining and pushing the prices down. Encouraged by this display, I purchased a "handmade Moroccan ring." Later, to my shock, I discovered the exact same ring is mass-produced in Turkey and sold online in Romania for a third of the price. The disillusionment didn’t stop there. We investigated other purchases made during the tour – argan oil, scarves, and a bag – and found that none of the "cooperatives" were on official lists. These claims were simply false. We feel lucky not to have bought a leather pouffe or carpet. The most painful aspect of this experience is not the financial loss - we agreed with every price and we know the local “game” of bargaining - but the betrayal of trust. Mohammed carefully crafted a narrative of authenticity, even including staged demonstrations of craftsmanship, to mislead us. We didn’t mind paying more for genuine products – but we cannot forgive the deliberate deception. Mohammed might be a charismatic guide and a friend of everybody in the Medina, but his role in this organized scam reflects poorly on him and the city of Fez. Our advice: If you tour with Mohammed, enjoy his knowledge, but do not trust the products he promotes as handmade or ethical. Fez is a wonderful city, but it deserves better than this.
