Additional Information

Situated 12km from the city of Fier and the coastline, the ruins of Apollonia are among Albania’s most frequented archeological destinations. Established near the Vjosa River in 588 BC by Greek colonists from Corfu and Corinth, Apollonia was also home to the Taulantii, a local Illyrian tribe who coexisted with the Greek colonies for centuries. The city was one of 30 dedicated to Apollo, the deity of the Sun, music, and poetry. Apollonia swiftly developed into a vibrant port city, enriched by active trading and a harbor that could accommodate nearly 100 ships. However, prosperity ceased following a devastating earthquake that led to extensive damage and gradual desertion. Presently, Apollonia’s ancient archeological site is among the most recognizable in Albania.
