- Walnut Canyon National Monument - Walnut Canyon boasts a rich human history. Evidence suggests that Archaic peoples, who roamed the Southwest thousands of years ago, occasionally inhabited the canyon. Later, the first permanent settlers thrived in the area from around 600 to 1400 C.E. Today, you can explore the Monument in several ways: enjoy sweeping views of Walnut Canyon and observe cliff dwellings from afar at the visitor center’s two observation points, or take one of the two trails to get a closer look at the ancient dwellings. The Rim Trail is 0.7 miles and takes about 30 minutes, while the Island Trail is 1 mile and takes roughly an hour.
- Meteor Crater Natural Landmark - Meteor Crater, also known as Barringer Crater, is a meteorite impact site located about 37 miles east of Flagstaff and 18 miles west of Winslow. In the 1960s and 1970s, NASA astronauts trained in the crater to prepare for the Apollo missions to the Moon. Meteor Crater is one of the few places on Earth where an exposed and fully intact meteorite impact site can be seen, resembling the lunar surface. The 1984 John Carpenter movie “Starman,” starring Jeff Bridges, filmed some scenes here. Don’t miss the Barringer Space Museum and the viewing platform, which offers the best view of the crater.
- Winslow - In 1972, Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey of the Eagles wrote the song “Take It Easy,” which includes the famous line, “Standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona.” In 1999, in response to the song’s popularity, the city of Winslow erected a life-size bronze statue and mural to commemorate it. After Frey’s passing in 2016, a life-sized statue of him was added to Standin’ on the Corner Park. During our lunch stop in Winslow, you can take the opportunity to snap a photo at this iconic location. Also in town is the last Harvey House, La Posada Hotel, designed by Mary Colter and opened in 1930. The hotel closed in 1957 and was later used by the Santa Fe Railway for offices. Abandoned by the railroad in 1994, it was bought, restored, and now operates as a hotel. Lunch will be at La Posada and is included in your tour fee (up to $20 per person).
