These were originally intended for the workmen who built the cathedral and were not meant for public access. Inside the dome, you can closely admire Giorgio Vasari’s frescoes of the Last Judgment (1572-9) with detailed explanations as you ascend. Looking down, you’ll notice that Baccio D’Angelo began adding a balcony in 1507, but only one of the eight sides was completed, leaving the other seven sides as rough brick to this day. Upon reaching the top of the Cupola, you’ll be captivated by the panoramic view of Florence.
