- The Baptistery of St. John - Discover the main attractions on this extensive tour of the Duomo Complex in Florence. This tour allows you to thoroughly explore all aspects of the Duomo Complex. After meeting our guide, you’ll be taken on a tour of the Piazza del Duomo, where you’ll learn about this captivating religious center. Following a comprehensive view of the Duomo from every angle of the square, you’ll gain access to the octagonal Baptistery of St. John. The guide will highlight the Baptistery’s famous golden mosaic ceiling and the impressive bronze doors known as the Gates of Paradise.
- Opera del Duomo Museum - Next, you’ll visit the splendid Duomo Museum in Florence, which boasts over 700 masterpieces from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, including Michelangelo’s Pietà Bandini. The museum also features remarkable works such as the Baptistery gates, Donatello’s sculptures, and the original wooden scaffolding of the dome. The guide will introduce you to some of the most renowned artworks by Michelangelo and Donatello. As the tour concludes, your guide will escort you to the entrance of the Cupola Dome. The only way to see the dome’s interior up close and enjoy the breathtaking view of Florence is by climbing its 463 steps (there is no elevator).
- Piazza del Duomo - The Cupola, designed and constructed by Filippo Brunelleschi, features narrow corridors for the ascent and descent. These corridors were originally intended for the cathedral’s maintenance workers and were not designed for public access. Inside the dome, you can closely admire Giorgio Vasari’s frescoes of the Last Judgment (1572-9) with detailed explanations as you ascend. Looking down, just above the drum, you’ll notice Baccio D’Angelo’s unfinished balcony from 1507, with seven of the eight sides still in rough brick. Upon reaching the top of the Cupola, you’ll be captivated by the stunning panoramic view of Florence. After visiting the Cupola with your pre-reserved timed ticket, you can also explore the interior of the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, Santa Reparata, and climb Giotto’s Bell Tower at your leisure.
