For centuries, butchers and fishmongers sold their goods here, replaced by goldsmiths and jewelers in the 16th century by order of the Medici nobles. • Basilica of Santa Croce - The 14th-century Basilica of Santa Croce is one of the city’s most impressive medieval monuments. Inside, visitors will admire Giotto’s frescoes depicting the life of St. Francis, a wooden crucifix by Donatello, and Brunelleschi’s marvelous Pazzi Chapel, a masterpiece of Renaissance proportion. • Piazza della Signoria - Piazza della Signoria was the political heart of the Renaissance city, where the fortunes of the Florentine Republic are prominently displayed in the shadow of the imposing Palazzo Vecchio. This grand building was the seat of the city magistrates, guardians of Florence’s democratic autonomy. Visitors will explore the powerful Medici family’s growing influence in their affairs, eventually becoming de-facto rulers of the city. This piazza was also the site of the apocalyptic sermons of the preacher Savonarola, who was executed here in 1498.
