Overall very good... - Overall very good experience. We booked a five hour tour which was broken down into two tours with two different tour guides. The details were little less but we figured it out. The tour guides were nice enough to show us the restrooms and where we can get water.

Good tour - The tour guide was very informative and kept us engaged. The statue of David is very impressive and the stories the guide shared with us, on the artist, brought them to life.

Wonderful tours - We chose the 10:30 start time. We first had the guided tour of the historical part of Florence with Annette, followed by about 30 minutes in the Accademia, focused on the David. We then had about an hour break and then met again at 1:45 to tour the Uffizi with a different guide (I don’t remember her name, but both guides were great!). I really appreciated how the guide did in-depth explanations of some of the most famous works, like Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Spring. The museum is large so I appreciated this tailored approach rather than trying to figure it out myself. You will definitely be walking A LOT with this tour, but it was well worth it in my opinion.

The guides made a big difference to my understanding of the Renaissance. - Although my understanding of art is minimal, the tour guides Stephanie & Angela made it so interesting with their immense knowledge of the paintings & sculptures with little background stories which I found fascinating. I enjoyed it more than I expected to.

TripAdvisor Provided No Meaningful Way to Communicate with Tour Operator When We Ran Late Because of Public Transport - I booked this tour based on the fact that we would be traveling by train from our docked cruise ship La Spezia to Florence. I think my mistake was having faith that the Italian trains would run on time. We made the first train on time, which then left late enough to miss the connecting train. However, when we arrived to our transfer in Pisa, the second train was running just late enough that we caught it! Saved. We thought we’d make it to Florence Santa Maria Novella at about 10:05 to then be able to take a taxi to our tour meeting point at the Uffizi in time for our 10:30 tour. We did not. That train was cancelled and the next train was to arrive at 10:32 (tour at 10:30), and that was also late by 10 minutes. I stress that we were personally on time for the trains. None of this was the tour operator’s fault of course. When I realized we were running late, I tried to communicate through the Tripadvisor app under the “Communciate with Tour Operator” button. Apparently this was an independent tour operator through Viator, sold by TripAdvisor, so when I reached out, I received no timely response. My goal was to try to coordinate with the operator directly so we could meet directly at a later meeting point on the walking tour and salvage some of the tour. Nobody responded for 4 hours, and by that time the tour was nearly over and unsalvageable. I was told after the fact that I could call some “emergency numbers” to reach the tour operator but none of that was provided to us prior to the trip. It would have been helpful for the operator or Viator or TripAdvisor to send us direct contact information ahead of time. Zero proactive or responsive communication by any of the tour operators or travel agents involved. Looking back, I would only book this tour if I were staying in Florence. I’m sure the tour guide would have been knowledgeable and helpful and provided a good service. Unfortunately, the travel agents’ systems got in the way and made it impossible to dynamically communicate when travel plans were interrupted by public transport. This isn’t a good system overall and it makes me question using TripAdvisor in the future.
