San Miniato al Monte Basilica is among the cityās most ancient ecclesiastical buildings. It is believed to be established upon the remnants of San Miniato, one of the cityās first martyrs who embraced Christianity and was executed in 250 AD in what used to be the Roman amphitheater. As per the folk tale, Miniato stood up holding his detached head, walked to the site where his Basilica now stands. The sacred building was sanctified in 1018, adopting a Romanesque architecture with a longitudinal layout, triple naves and tiers inclusive of a lower crypt level and a heightened presbytery level.
