At around 9:30 am, we will depart from Florence towards Siena, heading to San Gimignano. Before that, we’ll take you to uncover a hidden gem in Tuscany: Monteriggioni. The fortress of Monteriggioni was constructed between 1214 and 1219 by the Republic of Siena to oversee and safeguard the Via Francigena, the renowned pilgrims’ route linking Canterbury in the UK to Rome. Strolling inside the fortress and along the narrow streets of the medieval historic center, you’ll experience an incredible atmosphere and enjoy the panoramic view of the valley by climbing the ancient walls that encircle the village or visiting the small local museum. After this visit, we’ll proceed to our first small wine producer to tour the cellars and sample the local wines, including the famous Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG, the first Italian wine to receive the “designation of origin guaranteed and controlled,” accompanied by a rich, typical Tuscan lunch. Upon request, you can visit the vineyards and hear anecdotes and stories about organic and biodynamic viticulture and winemaking narrated by the winemaker himself. Once in San Gimignano, also known as the “Manhattan of the Middle Ages” and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990, you can admire the perfectly preserved medieval village and gaze from the terraces to take in the surrounding hills where some of the highest quality saffron is produced. In the afternoon, a second visit to a winery will be provided, where you can also taste Tuscan extra-virgin olive oil. With us, you won’t experience an ordinary tour; as mentioned before, we aim to share a genuine life experience to explore the lifestyle of our region and country by listening to those who live it. You can establish a personal connection with the farmers and not only taste their products. Visits to farms will not be just a quick stop for a glass of wine but a true intercultural experience.
