- Ruins of Uaxactun - UAXACTUN: Originally known as Siaan Ka’an, translating to ‘Born from Heaven,’ this city was settled from the middle preclassic period around 900 B.C. through the entire classic period, reaching its zenith from 500 A.D. to 900 A.D.
The first recorded date is 328 A.D. on Stela 9, and the final one in 899 A.D. on Stela 12, marking it as the longest-occupied city in Petén. It was once thought to be the most ancient until Nakbé and El Mirador were found, dating back to the Early Preclassic period (1000 B.C. - 200 B.C.).
Uaxactun, like other classical cities, was deserted in the early 10th century and reclaimed by the jungle until its rediscovery in 1916 by Silvanus Morley during Manuel Estrada Cabrera’s presidency. Uaxactun is where significant Mayan Civilization research began, with extensive studies primarily conducted by the Carnegie Institution of Washington. The excavations by John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood brought the Mayan Culture to global attention.
