Anhinga Trail - Up next is a brief detour to the Anhinga Trails, the park’s most frequented hikes. Anhinga is a mile-long boardwalk that meanders through a vibrant sawgrass marsh. If you’re eager to observe some wetlands wildlife, this is the ideal trail.
-
Christian Point Trail - Approaching soon is Christian Point Trail. For those seeking a quieter experience away from the crowds, this trail is a great choice, as it’s less popular in the park. It presents a slightly greater challenge than some other trails, yet remains moderately difficult. The entire trail is a four-mile round trip, leading to another expansive view of the shoreline accessible from Snake Bight Trail.
-
Mahogany Hammock Road - Just ahead is a quick detour to the Mahogany Hammock Trail. This boardwalk trail winds half a mile through a dense jungle of hardwood trees and takes about 10 minutes to complete. Beyond the lush greenery, the trail also features the largest living mahogany tree in the United States!
-
Everglades Outpost - Coming up soon is the Everglades Outpost, a wildlife rescue where visitors can encounter over 200 exotic animals. In 1991, Bob and Barbara Freer dedicated themselves to rescuing and rehabilitating animals that would otherwise be euthanized. They began with small birds and raccoons, eventually expanding to camels, lemurs, big cats, and more! Most of these animals were previously kept as illegal exotic pets before being cared for by the Freers, with the ultimate goal of releasing them back into their natural habitats.
-
Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center - Throughout the early 1900s, large portions of the Everglades were drained, filled in, and converted into agricultural or residential land. Unchecked hunting of local wildlife was rampant. It seemed inevitable that the entire wetland would be erased from existence.
-
33034 - Approaching is West Lake Trail. This half-mile boardwalk leads to West Lake and offers clear views across the water. It takes about 10 minutes to walk and is an excellent stop for those hoping to spot some of the park’s marine wildlife. The water isn’t particularly clear, but try to spot the telltale ripples of an alligator or crocodile swimming across the lake! If you were a deer, would you notice it approaching in time to escape?
-
Main Park Road - Earnest F. Coe may be known as the Father of the Everglades, but he didn’t create this park alone. He received significant help, especially from Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Douglas, a columnist for the Miami Herald, was renowned for her passionate advocacy for women’s rights, racial justice, and conservation. She joined Coe’s efforts in the 1920s, using her writing skills to defend the Everglades. She penned columns to capture public interest and wrote letters to Congress advocating for the cause.
-
Pa-Hay-Okee Lookout Tower - Coming up soon is Pa-Hay-Okee Lookout Tower. Accessible via a short boardwalk, this observation platform offers visitors panoramic views of the “river of grass” that characterizes much of the Everglades. It’s a quick, 5-minute detour, and definitely worth a visit.
-
Gumbo Limbo Trail - Up next is a brief detour to the Gumbo Limbo Trail. Gumbo Limbo is only half a mile long. It’s paved, shaded, and winds through a dense grove of hardwood trees and lush ferns. It is easy and can be completed in about 15 minutes.
-
Nine Mile Pond Canoe Trail - Ahead is Nine Mile Pond Trail. One key feature sets this trail apart from others: It’s not on land! This is a canoe trail. Visitors with boats can paddle the 5-mile loop through shallow, grassy marsh, not just observing the natural scenery from afar, but actually passing through it! Water levels are generally high enough in the fall and winter, though conditions can vary during a drought.
-

-
Snake Bight Trail - Up next is Snake Bight Trail. Don’t let the name intimidate you. That’s B-I-G-H-T, not B-I-T-E. A bight is a type of bay, and that’s exactly what you’ll find here. This 3.6-mile out-and-back trail winds through lush, shaded jungle before opening onto a scenic bay. It takes about an hour to walk on average, but it’s also open to bikes except for the brief boardwalk section at the end.
-
Pinelands Trailhead - Just ahead is Pineland Trail, where visitors can get up close with the most endangered ecosystem in the Everglades. This half-mile, paved loop runs through a forest of lush green pines, palmettos, and wildflowers. It feels like strolling through a primordial rainforest!
-
Flamingo Visitor Center - Looking for a glimpse of civilization? It’s just ahead, at the Flamingo Visitor Center. This comprehensive visitor center offers all the usual amenities, like snacks, restrooms, and an information booth, but it also provides much more. Want to rent a canoe or kayak? They have them! How about a bicycle? That too!
-
Eco Pond Trailhead - Just ahead is the Eco Pond Trail. If you’re eager to see more Everglades wildlife, this is the perfect stop. This half-mile trail loops around a small pond that’s almost always teeming with wading birds, ducks, songbirds, and more. Plus, keep an eye on the waters for softshell turtles and alligators!
