A Nocturnal Stroll Through Time

As the sun dipped below the Tuscan hills, casting a golden hue over the landscape, my wife and I found ourselves in the enchanting town of Foiano della Chiana. Known as one of the seven pearls of the Valdichiana, this town is often overlooked by tourists, yet it holds a treasure trove of historical gems waiting to be discovered. Our journey began with the Valdichiana Historical Walk, a guided exploration that promised to unveil over two millennia of history.

Our guide led us through the narrow, cobbled streets, each turn revealing a new layer of history. The town’s architecture is a testament to its rich past, with influences from the Sienese land evident in its civil structures. As we wandered, the guide regaled us with tales of the town’s past, from its prehistoric roots to its medieval splendor. We exited through the main door and ascended a splendid staircase leading to the Collegiate Church, which remains open until 10 pm. Inside, we were greeted by the magnificent canvas of Luca Signorelli and a stunning piece by Andrea della Robbia, among other works by renowned painters.

In the Collegiate square, we marveled at the second circle of walls and the Ice Gate, a testament to the town’s medieval fortifications. The intact bastion of the castle stood proudly, a silent guardian of the town’s history. Although the Church of San Francesco was closed, its exterior, with its elegant portico and bell tower, was a sight to behold, especially under the moonlit sky.

After our historical immersion, we decided to indulge in the local cuisine. We dined at Zinfarosa, a charming restaurant nestled within the town’s ancient walls. The meal was a delightful blend of traditional Tuscan flavors, a perfect end to our evening exploration.
