A Journey Through Time: The Castles of Conegliano

The allure of Italy’s Veneto region is undeniable, with its rolling hills, lush vineyards, and, of course, its storied castles. The bike tour through the majestic castles and picturesque hills of Conegliano offered a perfect blend of history, architecture, and the sheer joy of cycling through breathtaking landscapes.

Our journey began in the quaint town of Follina, a place that seems to have been plucked straight from a storybook. Just two kilometers into our ride, we were greeted by the imposing sight of Castel Brando in Cison di Valmarino. This castle, perched on the slopes of Monte Castello, has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. It was once known as Castello della Costa and has been a silent witness to centuries of change. The castle’s current name pays homage to the Brandolini family, who held lordship over the area for centuries. As we cycled past, I couldn’t help but imagine the lives of those who once walked its halls, their stories etched into the very stones.

The Heart of Veneto: Conegliano and Beyond

Continuing our journey, we made our way towards Vittorio Veneto, a town that seamlessly blends the old with the new. The road led us to Conegliano, where we paused for a much-needed coffee break at the foot of its castle. The Castle of Conegliano, strategically perched atop the Colle di Giano, offers a commanding view of the city and its surroundings. This medieval fortress is a testament to the region’s historical significance, serving as a reminder of the power struggles and alliances that shaped the Veneto region.

Our next destination was the Castle of San Salvatore in Susegana. This ancient fortified complex, with its crenellated walls and towering structures, is a marvel of medieval architecture. The castle is still inhabited, surrounded by magnificent vineyards that produce some of the finest wines in the region. As we cycled through the vineyards, the scent of ripe grapes filled the air, a sensory reminder of the region’s rich viticultural heritage.

A Taste of History: Collalto and Follina

The final leg of our journey took us to the Castle of Collalto, a site steeped in legend and lore. The keep of the Collalto castle is one of the few defensive structures that have remained intact, standing as a sentinel over the centuries. The story of Bianca di Collalto, a maid walled alive out of jealousy, adds a haunting layer to the castle’s history. As I stood before its ancient walls, I felt a profound connection to the past, a reminder of the human stories that history often conceals.

Returning to Follina, we concluded our tour with a visit to the splendid cloister of the Abbey. This serene space, with its intricate stonework and tranquil gardens, offered a moment of reflection after a day filled with exploration and discovery.
