Additional Information

The house where Germany’s most famous author and poet, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, was born is known as the Goethe House. This place has been modified into a museum to honor Goethe’s life and his contribution to German literature, so much so that the German Language Institute was named after him. His well-known pieces including ‘Götz von Berlichingen’, ‘Faust’, and ‘The Sorrows of Young Werther’, have had a monumental impact on the literary world. Originally, this building which now serves as a museum, was home to the Goethe family until 1795. After changing ownership several times, it was reconstructed as a tribute to the writer by geologist Otto Volger in 1863. Despite damage from the Allied bombing of Frankfurt, it was swiftly restored post-war. Owing to the meticulous renovation, visitors can appreciate the authentic surroundings, including the unchanged architectural style, decor, antique furniture, and artwork, reminiscent of Goethe’s formative years. For those passionate about literature, the museum is not to be missed.
