Frankfurt is often hailed as the birthplace of German democracy. Following the French Revolution of 1848, which ignited numerous uprisings within the German Federation, most German principalities either ceded power or agreed to share it with elected representatives of the populace. A central coordinating body, the “Nationalversammlung” (national assembly), gathered in the former St. Paul’s Church in Frankfurt and successfully enacted a common constitution before the movement’s momentum waned.
A year later, most princes had regained power through military means, and democracy was paused until the establishment of the Weimar Republic in 1918. Despite this, the national assembly and its constitution are regarded as the foundations of democratic Germany. The “Paulskirche” serves as a memorial to this early democracy, with its rise and fall depicted during a guided tour.
