Greek temples brought to life by a delightful guide - With our dear friends and traveling companions, the Chiltons, we had the good fortune to tour Sicily's Valley of the Temples with the wonderful Ilaria. She told us she had been doing this tour (among others) for just over 20 years and she still loves it. She loves the place (who wouldn't? it is grand and peaceful at the same time), the history, and the people she meets. Ilaria explained how the fortification wall around the temple mount had been the burial place of nobles, a fact we were entirely ignorant of, and she had a notebook of illustrations that were critical to learning how these massive chunks of golden limestone were quarried, transported, assembled, and finished on site. Ilaria was very honest when we asked a question to which there is no (as yet) known answer. That is what makes a tour of such a site so evocative! Perhaps the answer will come in our lifetimes...or not. What was most impactful was the realization that these temples housed images of the gods, were visited by an extremely small elite of priests, and that no ordinary human being ever entered them. Beyond the astounding subject matter of the tour of the Valley of the Temples, I want to say that the temperament of a guide is a most important factor in a pleasant experience! Ilaria is warm, has a wonderful sense of humor, is a keen judge of the interest of her visitors and the extent of their physical energy, and an excellent communicator. We wished we could have taken her along for the rest of our journey! Thank you, Ilaria!!
