Additional Information

A walkthrough of Villa Romana del Casale located in Piazza Armerina, Sicily, that is considered one of the rare gems left from the Roman era on this island.

Constructed during the 3rd and 4th century AD, it is believed the villa was owned by Valerio Massimiano, a prominent patrician of the empire. From 1997, it has been recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site, largely due to its globally revered mosaics.

The residential structure, containing 48 rooms, revolves around a four-sided peristyle that is entered from the entrance hall. The peristyle’s floor is entirely mosaic featuring illustrations of European and African wildlife, and the accompanying garden boasts a sizable fountain made up of three pools, adorned with marble on the exterior and mosaic on the interior.

The guided tour includes visiting the room featuring ten females depicted in bikinis engaged in different physical activities: discus throw, ball games, resistance training, and cross-country. It also includes a subsequently visit to the Basilica, showcasing the multicolored marble floors.

Fabulous Mauritania - Our group of 4 was guided through Mauritania by Hadrami Bouh who owns Tour in Mauritania. Bouh lead us through his country, where his family has lived for many generations. We learned about his father and grandfather making haji by camel. He showed us cave paintings, the Eye of the Sahara along with the ancient cities along the caravan routes to the sea. Not only is he very knowledgeable about the country and the geography, he was very open to all of our questions about his and his family's lives. Our group was comprised of very experienced travelers. Each of us has been to over 200 different countries. We all agreed that Bouh was among the best guide we've had. I can't say enough about him. I highly -- very highly -- recommend him.

Six, if not seven, stars - This site is fabulous if you are even remotely interested in mosaics. The site is a palace rather than a villa and is quite extensive. Some has been reconstructed so you get a good sense of the original buildings. The mosaic floors are incredibly extensive and fantastic. Access is via raised walkways, which are quite narrow Go at a time when it will be quiet as it can get very busy and noisy

ALWAYS SOMETHING NEW TO SEE - This was my second visit to the Roman Villa and every bit as exciting as the first time in 2019. Constant excavation and research is going on so it was delightful to see what had been discovered or even reassessed in a historical context from my last visit. The villa is an outstanding example of both visual storytelling and of the architectural detail of the time. Each room contains tiny detailed mosaics of hunting scenes, athletics, mythology and daily living. The “grand hall” is breathtaking in its detail of the capture of exotic creatures around the world. The entire villa speaks of the wealth of its owner (still tentative as of 10/23 as to who this was) and the culture of the time. We stayed approximately 2.5 hours but could have easily stayed an hour or two longer! There is a museum on site that can be easily missed but is fascinating as well! Wear your most comfy walking shoes when visiting this site!
