- Taya Caves - Taya Caves is a revered treasure of Buddhist carvings located within the grounds of Josen-ji. This intricate labyrinth of halls and galleries is adorned with numerous reliefs etched into the rock, depicting Buddhist deities, historical Buddhist figures, renowned temples, both real and mythical creatures, mandalas, zodiac symbols, and family emblems.
The caves were meticulously excavated and sculpted by Shingon Buddhist monks from the Kamakura period (1192-1333) through to the Edo period (1603-1868).
- Enoshima Island - Enoshima is a charmingly tourist-friendly island situated just off the coast, yet conveniently connected to the mainland by a bridge. It boasts a range of attractions, including a shrine, park, and observation tower. On clear days, visitors can enjoy stunning views of Mount Fuji.
- Kotoku-in (Great Buddha of Kamakura) - The Great Buddha of Kamakura is a magnificent bronze statue of Amida Buddha located within the grounds of Kotokuin Temple. Standing at 11.4 meters tall, it has long been recognized as the second tallest bronze Buddha statue in Japan, only surpassed by the statue in Nara’s Todaiji Temple.
The statue was cast in 1252 and was originally housed within a large temple hall. However, the temple structures were repeatedly destroyed by typhoons and a tsunami during the 14th and 15th centuries, and since the late 15th century, the Buddha has stood in the open air.
- Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine - Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is Kamakura’s most significant shrine. It was established by Minamoto Yoriyoshi in 1063 and was expanded and relocated to its present location in 1180 by Minamoto Yoritomo, the founder and first shogun of the Kamakura government.
The shrine is dedicated to Hachiman, the patron deity of the Minamoto family and samurai in general. The enshrined deities include the deified spirits of the ancient Emperor Ojin, who is associated with Hachiman, Hime-gami, and Empress Jingu at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine.
