- Dazaifu Tenmangu - Dazaifu Tenmangu is the principal shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning (approximately 90 minutes, free time for activities).
Dazaifu Tenmangu honors the renowned god of learning, Sugawara no Michizane. It stands as the main shrine among around 12,000 Tenmangu shrines in Japan and is the largest in Kyushu.
In addition to the striking vermilion main hall and surrounding gardens, Dazaifu Tenmangu features many historical structures, including Tenkai Inari Shrine, Treasure Hall, and the Sugawara History Museum.
Japanese students frequently visit the shrine before exams to pray for success and a smooth academic journey.
The approach road to Dazaifu is lined with numerous popular snack and gift shops, all of which are worth exploring. Notably, the “ume mochi” here is a must-try. Its sticky outer layer and red bean filling are sweet yet not overly rich, making it a delightful treat.
- Nyoirinji Temple - Nyoirinji Frog Temple - The clear sound of wind chimes carrying wishes resonates throughout the temple (approximately 40 minutes, free time for activities).
Nyoirinji Frog Temple is believed to have been established by the esteemed Japanese monk Gyoki during the Nara period. It enshrines the Nyoirin Kannon and grants the wishes of those who come to pray. It is also recognized as a cultural property in Fukuoka Prefecture.
Nyoirinji Temple is affectionately known as the “Frog Temple.”
Visitors can enjoy the changing scenery of the four seasons here, such as cherry blossoms and hydrangeas in spring, maple leaves in autumn, and lush greenery in summer.
In particular, during summer, thousands of wind chimes adorned with wishes for a safe summer are displayed in the temple.
The soothing sound helps people forget the summer heat.
※ Each wind chime is available for purchase at 500 yen. Please write your wish and offer it at the temple.
- Yufuin Onsen - Yufuin Onsen (free time for activities, lunch expenses are self-covered).
“Yufuin Onsen” is a top tourist destination cherished by Japanese girls. Surrounded by mountains, Yufuin Onsen exudes a tranquil and gentle ambiance, providing a deeply relaxing experience.
Here, you can savor the stunning scenery while indulging your taste buds, enveloping yourself in pure happiness.
The “sightseeing carriage” in Yufuin Onsen, which began over 30 years ago, is now a renowned attraction. The route starts at JR Yufuin Station, passes through Fuzan-ji Temple and Unagi Hime Shrine, and returns to the station.
Yunotsubo Street, located at the base of Yufudake, is lined with souvenir shops offering Oita specialties like yuzu pepper and eateries serving local delights such as fried chicken tempura, drawing a constant stream of visitors.
- Lake Kinrin - In spring, the cherry blossoms along the Oita River bloom. Against the backdrop of Yufudake, under the blue sky and white clouds, the light pink cherry blossoms and rapeseed flowers on both sides create a stunningly colorful spring scene.
