Established in 1896 as Imperial Steel Works, it was created to meet the growing demand from the nation’s shipbuilding, railway, construction, and armaments industries. The site, formerly the town of Yahata, now part of Kitakyūshū, was chosen for its proximity to coal mines and easy sea access.

“Tagawa City Coal and History Museum”: Industrial Ruins
Located within Coal Memorial Park, this museum’s First Exhibition Hall educates visitors on coal formation, mining processes, and the lives of coal miners, providing a comprehensive history of coal mining. The Second Exhibition Room showcases paintings and essays inspired by coal miners’ life stories. The Third Exhibition Room features historical materials from ancient to modern times related to “The History and People of the Tagawa Region”.
