The “sightseeing carriage” at Yufuin Onsen, which began over three decades ago, is now a renowned attraction. The journey starts at JR Yufuin Station, goes past Fuzanji Temple and Unagi Hime Shrine, and returns to the station, lasting about an hour. The horses gently sway as they graze along the way.
Yunotsubo Street, located at the base of Yufudake, is lined with souvenir shops offering Oita specialties like yuzu pepper and eateries serving local treats such as fried chicken tempura, drawing a steady flow of tourists. Additionally, the nearby area along the Oita River, just a street away, is perfect for a leisurely walk.
- African Safari - Kyushu Wildlife Park African Safari: Experience nature up close at Japan’s largest wild zoo (approximately 110 minutes, including free time and lunch at your own expense).
When visiting Beppu and Yufuin Onsen in Oita Prefecture, Kyushu, the “Kyushu Wildlife Park African Safari” is a must-see, cherished by locals. As Japan’s largest wild zoo, it offers a unique experience. Ride the jungle bus and feel like the animals in the park. You can feed lions, elephants, black bears, and observe giraffes, rhinoceroses, zebras, and more roaming the grasslands. This rare experience in Japan is a must for families visiting Kyushu! In the “Small Animal Interaction Area,” visitors can interact with cats and dogs, ride mini horses, and feed kangaroos and squirrel monkeys. It’s a delightful experience for both adults and children.
(Note: Expenses are at your own cost and do not include the zoo entrance fee of 2,600 yen or the jungle bus fee of 1,300 yen.)
- Umi Jigoku - Umi Jigoku in Beppu is part of the hot spring area with the highest water output in Japan. A visit to Beppu is incomplete without touring the hells.
“Umi Jigoku” is one of the eight hells and is the largest in Beppu, formed by the eruption of Mt. Tsurumi 1,200 years ago. The pool’s water is a striking porcelain blue, and though it appears cool, it is actually a hot spring with a temperature of 98 degrees. The stunning sight of the spring’s gushing water is a must-see for visitors.
- Kamado Jigoku - Beppu is home to many hot springs, often referred to as hells. Among the most famous are the eight hells: Umi Jigoku, Oniishi Bouzu Jigoku, Yama Jigoku, Kamado Jigoku, Oniyama Jigoku, Shiraike Jigoku, Chinoike Jigoku, and Tatsumaki Jigoku.
Kamado Jigoku is one of these. It is said that during the spring and autumn festivals at the Hachimangu Shrine of Kamado, food is cooked using the heat from the hells. This tradition led to the name “Kamado Jigoku.” The powerful jets and high-temperature springs reach up to 90 degrees, making it a fascinating sight.
