Additional Information

Constructed in 1421 by Joao Gonçalves Zarco, the pioneer of the archipelago, Funchal is recognized as the capital of Madeira. However, it wasn’t until after the development of its harbor that the city evolved into the financial and governmental heart of the island. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, it became a hub for traders, seafarers, and buccaneers who paused here during their expeditions to the Indies. This came particularly after the treaties inked between Portugal and England. However, the city later transitioned from being a commercial and nautical hub to a haven for aristocrats and global figures who became charmed by the island. Among the illustrious individuals who chose it as a sanctuary were the Austro-Hungarian Empress Sissi, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and the Austrian Emperor, Carlos I. Be encouraged to start exploring Funchal and its six centuries of rich history.
