We loved the mountain view of the green and blue lakes, and the village in the cauldera. - We booked a tour in a 4 x 4 jeep. We began driving along the coast of Funchal toward a little fishing village. During the drive we noticed that the houses and other buildings were all built into the sides of several mountains, with terraces everywhere. At the lower levels there were banana trees everywhere on the hillside where there was room. We arrived at the village to find it to be very cute, colourful, and very picturesque. There were several species of trees that we were not familiar with, and of course there were lots of different types of palm trees. Next we headed up to the top of one of the many mountains on the island. There was a new road which we took for a while, then then driver took the older, more direct and very steep road to the top of the mountain, hence the 4 x 4 vehicle. We had a wonderful view from the top, and we looked down to see a village nestled in the middle of a caldera. We had a clear view of the green and the blue lakes. The blue lake reflects the sky giving it the blue colour, while the green lake has algae, hence its colour. We then went down very rough 'road' where you could hide a large water melon in the average rut. It was great fun bouncing our way down the mountain. Back in town we drove about a little, and then the driver asked us where we would like to be let off. We had planned a HOHO so he let us off at one of the stops. The only negative was the pick up at the boat. We were on time (15 minutes early for the tour), but some people were not as prompt. In stead of rewarding the people who had rushed to arrive on time, the driver rewarded those who were tardy. He waited for 40 minutes for the late comers. I think this is very poor use of our time.
