The morning is typically spent exploring the southwestern coastline around Ribeira Brava and the charming village of Lugar de Baixo.

Travel along the old roads, near the stunning southwestern cliffs, ascending from sea level to approximately 1600m at Bica da Cana.

• Levada do Paul da Serra - Weather permitting, take a 30/40-minute walk (optional) along a levada in Paul da Serra. Flexible options include a walk in Fanal Forest.

• Paul da Serra - Cross Madeira’s only plateau, known as the “Madeiran tundra,” towards Porto Moniz. If the weather is favorable, spend ample time here enjoying the incredible views over the volcanic valleys, formed during the third phase of eruptions that created Madeira Island.

The plateau crossing takes about 45 minutes, with several photo stops.

• Fanal Forestry Station - Traverse the entire Fanal, stopping for photos.
