Very interesting tour - great way to start understanding Funchal history - Very informative 2 hour tour around Funchal old town with a volunteer History graduate from Funchal university. Just 8 in our group so we were easily able to ask questions and hear our tour guides explanations. The highlight was a visit to the farmers market and the fish market (it was a Friday so lots going on), plus some remarkable old buildings, including Blandys wine lodge). The tour meets inside the courtyard of the Jesuit college, we stayed for a coffee from the college refectory at the end of the tour which was absolutely delicious and the cheapest coffee we had during our visit!! Highly recommend this tour and happy to think the money is going towards helping students at the university. Tips: Look out for the yellow sign for the college entrance. Checkin is at the desk in the shop when you arrive. Wear comfy shoes - you’re on your feet for 2 hours! Bring water - especially if it’s a hot day. Have a coffee from the college refectory and enjoy the cool and quietness in the building quadrangle!

Excellent informative tour - We found this small group tour (there were 5 of us plus the guide) really informative and our guide Patrycia, who was a gap year student from Poland, knew so much about Funchal and its history. We went into places we would never have known about and were told all sorts of information including the meaning of the tiles on the pavements, all things we would have not even noticed. The University building where the tour starts has a small cafe and a nice courtyard to sit in prior to (or after) the tour. Would definitely recommend.

Would do it again - Our Polish volunteer was really good. Her English was excellent and her knowledge and understanding of the city were commendable. We learnt a lot in the 2 hours she was with us. Highly recommend

Good value tour of Funchal - A very interesting tour with a student guide who seemed knowledgeable about Madeira history. Only 4 people on the tour so easy to ask questions. We thought the tour was very good value. The History Tellers web site is a bit confusing. I thught I was booking the hisory tour but the web site sitched me onto another tour without me realising. When I turned up for the tour they left me switch to one I wanted.

Average..just very average - We make a point of doing a walking tour in any new city we visit. You normally get to see/hear info that's a bit different/unusual from someone who is a local and really knows the place. Our guide was quite personable and had obviously learnt the script but this tour lacked any real depth. Several questions went unanswered and to be honest it was probably the least enjoyable/informative tour we've ever been on. It was just very average. With a bit of detective work and th Internet you could probably have discovered more..shame really..opportunity missed. Oh and instructions to get to start point VERY confusing 😕
