Embarking on a tour of the Maquiné Cave, named to honor its past owner, Joaquim Maria do Maquiné. Its splendor, grandeur, and utmost beauty are hard to miss. It houses extensive chambers adorned with unusual speleothems, including Stalactites, Stalagmites, Electites, Travertines, Curtains, etc. The grotto was scientifically unraveled by Peter Willelm Lund, a Dane, back in 1834. Minas Gerais holds the title of the birthplace of paleontology, archeology, and speleology in America. Situated in Cordisburgo, hometown of the renowned writer João Guimarães Rosa, you’ll get a chance to explore his childhood abode, learn about his legacy, his tales, and savour excerpts from his books recited by the local teenagers known as the “Miguilins”. We’ll make a pit stop at the famous Elephant House, an impressive structure built in the likeness of a mighty Indian Elephant.
